2010 was a mid-term election year, with 37 senate seats being contested.
The Republican Party gained 63 seats in the House of Representatives and recaptured the majority there. They also gained six seats in the Senate, but remained in the minority.
After the 2010 election, the Republicans also controlled 29 of the 50 state governorships.
