Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Justin Verlander won the 2006 American League Rookie of the Year Award. Verlander's primary competition, Jonathan Papelbon and Francisco Liriano, were sidelined late in the year - which paved the way for Verlander.

Justin Verlander was the first starting pitcher to win the AL Rookie of the Year since 1981 (Dave Righetti). The last Detroit Tiger to win the award was Lou Whitaker in 1978.
