Novak Djokovic became the first Serbian to win a tennis major when he defeated upstart Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the men's finals of the 2008 Australian Open (4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(2)).
The three seed Djokovic defeated defending champion Roger Federer in the semi-finals and ended the streak of 11 straight majors won by either Federer or Rafael Nadal. Tsonga deafeated Nadal in the other semi-final.
Novak Djokovic became the fourth youngest player to win the Australian Open at 20 years, 250 days (Mats Wilander was the youngest in 1983).
