It was a good year for US speed skating as Joey Cheek, Shani Davis, and Chad Hedrick each won gold medals. US snowboarders also won three gold medals.
There were 84 medal events, and three events debuted in 2006 - mass start biathlon, team sprint cross country, snowboard cross, and team pursuit speedskating.
