John Christopher Depp II was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Depp family moved a lot in Johnny's early childhood, and eventually settled in Miramar, Florida. In 1978, Johnny Depp dropped out of school to be a rock musician. He played in garage bands and later moved out to Los Angeles with his band.
The first major movie role for Johnny Depp was in the classic horror film "A Nightmare on Elm Street". Depp's breakout role was that of Officer Tom Hanson on the TV show "21 Jump Street". The show made him a teen idol - a distinction which did not suit him at all.
When Johnny Depp's contract with the show ended, he began his practice of taking primarily "quirky" roles. It started with the lead role in "Edward Scissorhands" and went on to include movies such as "Ed Wood", "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", and of course "Pirates of the Caribbean".
