DiCaprio reportedly got his first name because his mother was looking at a portrait by Leonardo da Vinci when she first felt him kick. His parents divorced when Leo was one year old, and he grew up in suburban Los Angeles.
Leonardo DiCaprio's first acting job came in 1989 on the TV version of the film "Parenthood". He also appeared on the soap opera "Santa Barbara". His most notable television role is probably that of Luke Brower on "Growing Pains" in the early 1990s.
DiCaprio's first film role was in "Critters 3", but he gained critical acclaim for his next two movies - "This Boy's Life" and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". After several more solid films and performances, Leonardo DiCaprio's stardom exploded with the mega-hit movie "Titanic". Leonardo DiCaprio continues to play critically acclaimed roles - including award nominated roles in "The Departed" and "Blood Diamond" in 2006.
