Daniel Day-Lewis was born April 29, 1957 in London, England to actress Jill Balcon and British Poet Laureate Cecil Day-Lewis. He was sent to boarding school where he was exposed to acting.
After graduation he first tried cabinet-making, but when he was not accepted for an apprenticeship he turned to acting school.
Day-Lewis garnered small film roles in the early 80's including a street thug in "Gandhi". His first leading role came in 1987's "The Unbearable Lightness of Being". In 1989 he won the Academy Award for his portrayal of Christy Brown in "My Left Foot". Daniel Day-Lewis has since been selective in accepting film roles. He won an Oscar again in 2008 for "There Will Be Blood".
Daniel Day-Lewis married Rebecca Miller, the daughter of playwright Arthur Miller, in 1996.
