Theodore Ernest "Ernie" Els was born on October 17, 1969 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Ernie Els excelled at golf at an early age and won the Junior World Golf Championship for Boys 13-14 in 1984. He turned pro in 1989 and got his first win in 1991 on the Southern Africa Tour.
Ernie Els joined the PGA Tour in 1994 and was the tour's rookie of the year. To date Els has won three major championships - the US Open in 1994 and 1997 as well as the British Open in 2002.
Besides PGA Tour events, Ernie Els frequently plays in European Tour and Sunshine Tour events.
