Albert Pujols was born Jose Alberto Pujols Alcantara in the Dominican Republic on January 16, 1980. His family moved to New York in 1996, and later settled in Independence, Missouri.
Pujols had success in high school baseball but was not highly recruited. He was selected as the 402nd overall pick in the 1999 draft by the St Louis Cardinals. He was league MVP in single-A in 2000.
He had a phenomenal rookie season with the Cardinals in 2001 and was named 2001 Rookie of the Year. Pujols went on to become one of the most feared hitters in baseball, and won the National League MVP Award in 2005 and 2008.
Albert Pujols was married in 2000 and became a United States citizen in 2007.
