James B. Patterson was born March 22, 1947 in Newburgh, New York. Before becoming a best-selling author, James Patterson was an advertising executive for JW Thompson. Patterson had several books published during his advertising career, but he retired from advertising when his career took off with the success of "Along Came A Spider".
Patterson's best known character is Alex Cross, a black forensic psychologist who was the main character in such books as "Kiss the Girls", and "Mary, Mary". He has also written the Women's Murder Club series - which has been green lighted for an ABC TV pilot.
