by Ian McEwan
"Atonement" starts out in England in the summer of 1935 with imaginative youth Briony Tallis and her family. Neighbor Robbie Turner is jailed for assault by a tragic accusation from Briony.
The next part of the book takes place five years later Robbie is released and is in the British Army in WWII. Briony has become a nurse who wants to make amends with Robbie and her sister Cecilia who are now together.
The book closes with an older Briony, a novelist near the end of her life, experiencing a deeply emotional experience.
