Nelly Kim Furtado was born December 2, 1978 in Victoria, British Columbia. Her parents were Portuguese immigrants to Canada. Nelly was named after Soviet gymnast Nellie Kim. Furtado was raised Roman Catholic and helped her mother with her housekeeping job.
Nelly Furtado graduated high school in 1996 and moved to Toronto, where she was in a trip hop duo with Tallis Newkirk called Nelstar. After leaving that group, she produced a demo and eventually signed a deal with DreamWorks Records in 1999.
Her debut album "Whoa, Nelly!" was released in 2000 and was extremely successful - boosted by the singles "I'm Like A Bird" and "Turn Off the Light". She received critical acclaim for her mixing of various genres and musical styles. Nelly Furtado even won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Furtado's third album "Loose" was released in 2006 and produced her first number one single "Promiscuous".
Nelly Furtado has a daugher named Nevis.
